Anti-Pornography Law - Indonesia

Back

July 2006 Conservatives in Indonesia see the new anti-pornography law as a stepping-stone to imposing Sharia Law. But moderates claim the law criminalises women. Under the proposed law, kissing in public or wearing short clothing would be outlawed. "They're trying to push Indonesians to be conservative", fears feminist Dr Gardis Aviva. The bill is being promoted by the Islamic Defenders Front, led by a cleric who studied Whabbism in Saudi Arabia. But opponents argue that Whabbism goes against traditional Indonesian culture. "We have a very different tradition of Islam. We have never had a history of adopting Arabic culture," explains Dr Ariva. Already, Sharia style laws are creeping into many Indonesia towns.
